How to Search For a Particular Email in Gmail

Unless you check and sort your email on a daily basis, you are bound to have a backlog at some point. When this happens, finding one particular email becomes a time consuming task. Thankfully, Gmail has provided its customers with features so they can quickly search through all the documents and emails within their accounts.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your Gmail account.

    • 2

Type your search word(s) in the "Search" box at the top of the page. The word can be an email address, name or any word that appears in the email you are searching for, such as "bake sale" or "cottage." When choosing search words, try to avoid generic words likely to appear in many emails, as this will yield you too many results.

    • 3

Click on "Search" and browse through your results. Your search word(s) will be highlighted in each email that appears in your results page.

    • 4

Click on "Show Search Options" next to the search box if you are unable to find the email you are looking for. A page will pop up with advanced search features that should help you find it, such as a section to include words you don't want to appear in your search results and a date range for when the email was sent.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use special characters in your search as Gmail does not recognize them. Examples of special characters include square brackets, currency symbols, the pound sign, asterisks and parentheses. As well, Gmail will only search for the exact word you type in. So if you search for the word "dog," you will not be shown results with the word "dogs."
