How Do I Locate a Status on a VA Insurance Policy?

If you're a veteran, then you're eligible for a VA insurance policy through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Before you can receive VA insurance, you have to file a claim and wait for it to be processed. Once you file your claim, you might not receive much correspondence about it from the VA for months. However, you can still locate the status on a VA insurance policy claim by simply calling VA's customer service hotline.

Instructions

  1. On the Phone

    • 1

Locate any papers you have that contain your VA claim number. Any correspondence you've received from the VA concerning your claim should contain the VA insurance policy number.

    • 2

Call the VA at 800-827-1000. Keep pressing "0" until you reach a customer service representative.

    • 3

Provide the representative with your full name, Social Security number and claim number to verify your identity.

    In a VA Office

    • 4

Visit your nearest VA office (see Resources).

    • 5

Ask to speak with a VA representative. If the office is busy that day, you may schedule an appointment for a later date.

    • 6

Tell the VA representative that you want to check on the status of a claim. Provide the representative with your full name, Social Security number and veteran's ID card.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your claim number is often simply your Social Security number.

  • The time that it takes the VA to process your claim varies depending on how many claims it has received. The status of your VA insurance policy could be pending for six months or longer.
