Junk foods are full of the ingredients so many people love including sugar and salt. However, this is about all these foods contribute to your diet. Junk foods lack nutrition and provide excess calories and fat. However, despite this fact, many people find it difficult to stop eating the greasy, salty, sugary processed foods they love. Do not make junk food easily accessible. Remove any junk food from your kitchen or make a vow not to buy anymore once you have eaten the foods you currently have. Do not keep junk food on hand such as in your car or office at work. Avoid passing the vending machine or the aisle where you favorite junk foods are located in the grocery store if at all possible.

Plan your meals in advance so that you are always prepared when hungry. Eating junk food is at times a result of lack of planning and preparation. If you are starving and do not have a meal prepared, a stop at a fast food restaurant or a bag of chip seems like the quickest solution. Prepare your meals in advance to make sure you always have something on hand to eat. Buy instant oatmeal and healthy cereals for a quick breakfast in the morning; pack your lunch the night before to take to work; and prepare your dinner ingredients the night before so that you only have to put them in the oven when you get home from work. Make sure you have healthy snacks on hand at times when you are prone to visit the snack machine. For instance, if you find yourself craving something sweet in the afternoon, keep sweet fruits such as grapes and raisins on hand to eat at these moments.

Incorporate new foods into your diet to add variety. Your tendency to reach for junk food may stem from you desire to eat something different. Buy a cookbook or take a class to learn how to make foods you do not normally cook at home.

Make your own healthy versions of the junk foods you love. Making your own food allows you to control the ingredients and avoid overly processed foods. Prepare your own French fries by coating them in olive or canola oil and baking them in the oven; pop your own popcorn at home using an air popper and experiment with seasonings such as black pepper, cumin and chili powder.

Find ways to reward yourself other than junk food. Buy something new, go to a movie or go for a massage instead of resorting to food as a reward.
