How to Adjust Throttles in Yamaha Rhinos

In order to enjoy the best operating experience with your Yamaha Rhino recreational vehicle, you should ensure that the throttle is set to the optimum idle speed. If the Rhino idles too slowly, the engine may die, especially in cold weather. If it idles too fast, it can be difficult to put the Rhino into gear. Yamaha lists the proper idle speed as 1,450 to 1,550 revolutions per minute (rpm). The owner's manual states that owners should check the idle speed and adjust, if necessary, every 750 miles.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the vehicle to allow the engine to warm up. Allow it to idle, gently pressing the accelerator if necessary, while occasionally revving the engine. When the vehicle responds quickly when revved, it is at proper operating temperature.

    • 2

Remove the Rhino's seats. Locate the locking lever beneath the seat. Lift the lever up and pull up on the front of the seat. At the same time, slide the seat forward and up until you can remove it from the vehicle.

    • 3

Remove the Rhino's console. Remove the parking brake cable boot by gently pulling the edges out from around the console. Grasp the sides of the console and lift it straight up. The first time you remove it, some force may be needed to disengage the clips. You will now have access to the Rhino's throttle.

    • 4

Connect the external tachometer to the spark plug lead. This procedure will differ depending on the tachometer model you are using, but generally you will attach a lead to both the positive and negative battery terminals, and use an inductive coil placed around the spark plug lead. Access the Rhino's battery and spark plug by lifting the cargo bed. Release the latches on each side of the bed and slowly raise it until it stops. Check the tachometer's manual for specific instructions.

    • 5

Read the tachometer gauge to see the current idle rpms. If it is higher than 1,550, you need to lower the rpms, and if it's lower than 1,450, you need to increase them.

    • 6

Locate the throttle stop-screw on the throttle. You should see it close to the point where the throttle cable attaches to the throttle body. To increase the rpms, rotate the screw clockwise, and to decrease rpms, turn it counterclockwise. You should be able to turn the screw with your fingers, but if not, use a pair of pliers or vise grips. Keep in mind that the adjustments will be small. Check the tachometer to ensure the idle speed falls between 1,450 to 1,550 rpms.

    • 7

Disconnect the external tachometer and close the cargo bed.

    • 8

Replace the center console by setting it straight down into place and gently tapping along the edges to lock it into place. Replace the parking brake boot.

    • 9

Replace the seats by inserting the tabs on the rear of the seats into the slots on the seat rail. Press the seat down and to the rear until it locks into place. Try to move the seat up and forward to ensure it's secure.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can rent an external tachometer from an auto-parts store for a few dollars.
