How to Correctly Use an Adjustable Wrench
An adjustable wrench is a handy device to have in your tool box. It can loosen or tighten a large variety of different sized bolts and other fasteners. There is more to using this type of wrench than simply adjusting the jaws to fit a bolt. If this wrench isn't used properly, you can strip the head of a bolt, making it harder to work with. Worse yet, an adjustable wrench can slip off the bolt and cause you to slam your hand against the nearest hard surface. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place the jaws of the wrench over the bolt. Turn the adjusting screw, which is located at the base of the jaws, with your thumb to open the jaws wider, if necessary.
-
2
Position the jaws so they are touching at least three sides of a hex-bolt. Turn the adjusting screw to close the jaws in on the bolt head while you hold the jaws parallel to the working surface.

3
Move the adjustable wrench handle back and forth gently while you continue to tighten the jaws onto the bolt head. When you can't move the wrench any more, the jaws should be properly closed.
-
4
Check to make sure the jaws of the wrench are snugly fit on the bolt. Pull the wrench handle towards you to loosen or tighten the bolt.

Tips & Warnings
To loosen a stubborn bolt, use leverage to your advantage. Grab the adjustable wrench handle as close to the end as you can while still maintaining a secure grip.
When you place the jaws of the wrench onto the bolt, make sure they are positioned towards you. That way, when you pull the handle toward you, the pressure will be on the jaws, and they shouldn't slip off.
