How to Import MSGs Into Your Contacts

The messages that you create and save within Microsoft Outlook are saved using the file format .MSG. MSG files contain the message itself, as well as the date it was saved, the header, the subject line and the "to:" line. You can import MSG files into Outlook's "Contacts" folder so that you will be able to access the information more easily within Outlook.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" on your computer's desktop and click on "Computer."

    • 2

Open the file folder that contains the MSG files you want to put into Outlook.

    • 3

Resize your "Computer" window. Open Microsoft Outlook and resize its window so that you can see both the "Computer" and Outlook windows at the same time.

    • 4

Click on the MSG file you want to move into Outlook and drag it into the Outlook window. Drop the file into one of your Outlook mail folders.

    • 5

Double-click on the MSG file to open it. Right-click on the recipient and click "Add to Outlook Contacts." Repeat with the sender if you want to add this information to Outlook.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make backup copies of the MSG files you want to move into Outlook and save them in a different folder so you will have access to the information if you delete one copy of the file accidentally.

  • Shutting down your computer while saving an MSG file can corrupt that file, rendering it useless.
