1
Develop an appropriate applicant pool. Recruit from as many different places as possible. Try career fairs, referrals from other employees or personal contacts. The more resumes you collect the more likely you are to find a highly qualified candidate. Select the best candidates based on their resumes and invite them to participate in the interview process.
-
2
Assemble a panel of interviewers or decide who will be conducting the interview if it will be a single person. Ensure that the person or persons conducting the interview are familiar with the proper way to interview a candidate and the proper way to evaluate an interview after it is complete.
-
-
3
Conduct the interview as effectively as possible. Avoid poorly worded questions that can be answered with short answers; ask questions that are open ended and apply directly to job responsibilities. You can glean additional information from a candidate's answer if you can get longer answers to your questions. Fill out a score sheet for each applicant or use another tool to compare candidates directly.
-
4
Compare the results of the interviews based on the score sheets that each interviewer should have kept. Rank the candidates in order from the highest score to the lowest score. Discuss strengths and weaknesses of specific candidates if the scores are very close. Determine not only if a candidate can successfully perform a job, but if she seems like the type that will enjoy the job and continue doing it for an extended period of time.
-
5
Make a decision based on all of the available information about which candidate is the most qualified for the position. Offer the job to the candidate that you judge to be the most qualified and the best fit for your organization.
