How to Repair the Speed Sensor on a Chevy Truck

Ensure your speedometer works properly by replacing a faulty speed sensor.

Chevy trucks include midsized pickup trucks, full-sized pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. Chevrolet trucks are equipped with a specialized sensor that tracks the amount of rotations on the transmission. This tells the sensor how fast the vehicle is moving at any given time and relays that message to the speedometer. When you notice your speedometer not working or jumping around, it's important to repair the sensor immediately by replacing it.

Things You'll Need

• Jack
• Jack Stand
• Wheel blocks
• Wrench
• Replacement sensor

Instructions

1. Park the Chevy truck, and allow the vehicle a half hour to cool down. Jack up the passenger-side front of the truck, and place it on a jack stand. Place wheel blocks around the opposite wheel.

2. Slide under the vehicle, and lie on your back on the passenger side of the vehicle. Look up, and you will see the transmission. The speed sensor is on the bottom of the transmission, and looks like a small plug sticking out of the unit. The sensor has an electrical connector plugged into it.

3. Depress the release tabs on each side of the electrical connector. Continue holding the release tabs as you pull the connector off of the speed sensor.

4. Grasp and twist the sensor counterclockwise using a wrench. This will unscrew and loosen the sensor. Remove the sensor from the transmission, and discard.

5. Insert the replacement speed sensor. Screw the sensor in; turn it clockwise until the sensor is secure. Plug the electrical connector into the sensor. You will hear a click signaling it's in place. Slide out from the vehicle. Lower the vehicle, and remove the wheel blocks.
