How to Mount an Extendible Arm Monitor

An extendible arm can help a wall mount move around.

Extendible arm monitors allow for maneuverability in a variety of conditions. They allow for ease of work and movement while using a computer, and can be invaluable for your business and your physical well-being. But this ease takes time to set up properly.

Things You'll Need

• Extendible monitor kit and bracket
• Monitor
• Electronic stud finder
• Screwdriver set with multiple ends
• Safety glasses
• Hammer
• Pencil
• Tarp

Instructions

1. Read the instructions and determine the location of this arm. Use the pencil to draw where you want the bracket--which holds the arm to the wall--and use the electronic stud finder to find the studs in the wall. Despite the LCD monitor's light weight, it is best to place the bracket on a stud to prevent drywall damage. If the bracket is being mounted to a brick wall, this is not a problem.

2. Trace the bracket on the wall, including the screw holes. This allows for less slippage during attachment, and also allows you to start the screws in the holes without bracing the bracket up. Start the screws into the requisite holes with a light tapping of the hammer--enough to embed the screws into the wall--then remove the screws. Place the bracket on the wall and screw it into place. When the bracket is attached to the wall, tighten the screws a little at a time to ensure a smug and even fit onto the wall.

3. Attach the extendible arm. If it needs to be assembled, follow the instructions included. When complete, make sure it moves smoothly but with enough resistance to maintain a pose. Attach it securely to the bracket on the wall, place a tarp or box underneath the assembly, and wait an hour. This is to ensure the bracket is secure on the wall and the assembly is securely attached to the bracket.

4. Determine cord placement. Check the extendible arm instructions to see if there's a solution built into the arm, or a manufacturers recommendation. Also, attach the cables to the computer and place them in the recommended way. Move the arm around to see if the mechanism of the arm pinches or pulls the cables in an adverse way. Any pinching or pulling could reduce monitor performance and cause damage.

5. Mount the monitor on the arm. Make sure it is secured to the arm. Check the arm to ensure it still maneuvers properly and securely, and that the power and monitor cables are not being pulled or pinched in any fashion. Test your monitor and computer to see if they function properly. After that, move the arm to check for any problems with functionality.

Tips & Warnings

• Keep an eye on the mounting bracket for any strain or stress marks. Also, check how flush it is with the wall to prevent wall damage. Be sure to follow the instructions on maintaining the extendible arm. And be sure to watch the monitor's picture quality: any change could be a sign that the monitor cable is being damaged by the extendible arm.
