How to Make Summer Hats

Summer hats are practical, attractive and fun to wear during the hot, sunny months. Homemade summer hats add a custom style to any outfit while providing a great cover for bad hair days that hot, humid weather can bring. Making a variety of summer hats gives your wardrobe versatility, saves you money and offers protection from the sun's harmful UV rays.

Instructions

1. 

   Pick a hat shape that fits your face and personality.

   Choose your hat shape. There are many varieties of hat shapes such as wide brim, tall crown, large brim and low crown. Determine what hat shape fits your style and facial structure. For instance, an oval shaped face may want a wider brim hat to give the illusion of a more round shaped face.

2. 

   Select a sewing pattern based on your skill level.

   Select your patterns. If you are sewing your hats, any commercial sewing company will offer a variety of patterns from simple to advanced sewing skill levels. Based on your skill level, decide what type of hat pattern you want to use. Select your fabric and sew each hat according to the pattern you select.

3. 

   Embellish a hat to add a personal touch.

   Embellish an existing hat. Add a personal touch to a hat you already own, or purchase a plain, summer hat at a craft store. Add ribbon or tulle around the crown of the hat and tie a knot or bow. Attach a large, silk flower to the crown or brim of the hat for a bright, summery touch.
