Changing your Internet service provider can be a lengthy and tedious process. The key is to arm yourself with knowledge before choosing a new service and being clear as to why you want to change ISP. By following these simple steps, you can limit the time it takes to transfer from one provider to another.

Instructions

1. Consult the terms and conditions of your current contract. Find the contract you signed with your current ISP and make sure you’ve read it thoroughly and know your rights before contacting them. If you are terminating your contract before it ends, you may be charged.

2. Call your current Internet provider and tell them you want to end the contract. You will be able to talk through your concerns and the reason for leaving. They may offer a better deal than you currently have or that you would have with a new provider.

3. Be firm and explain your reasons for leaving if you are determined to do so.

4. Be prepared to fill in an online form or write a latter, as you may not be able to terminate an agreement over the phone. You will also have to return any equipment, such as a router.

5. Choose your new provider. Ask around. Talk to friends and colleagues to get their opinions on their ISPs. Be aware of what you want from an ISP in terms of price, speed and convenience. Don’t just jump at the first appealing offer you see. Make sure you read the small print. What might appear to be a great deal may turn out to cost you more in the long term . Once you’ve chosen your provider, contact them and talk through your options and the service they provide. Be aware that there will be a wait before your line is installed and the appropriate router arrives. If you’ve moved, check that the ISP works in your new area.
