While making trips to the supermarket and completing other chores, you often end up with more plastic bags than you know what to do with. Instead of throwing them out and letting them sit in a landfill, you can find many ways to either repurpose or recycle the plastic bags to get rid of them.
Donate the bags to your local food bank. Food banks typically operate off of donations, and that includes the bags used to hand out groceries.
Check your local supermarket for a recycling bin. Many grocery stores have a drop-off bin near the entrance to the building where you can place your old grocery bags. The bags are then recycled and repurposed.
Drop the bags off at your local recycling facility. Most of these facilities recycle plastic, making it easy to drop off all of your plastic bags and allow the facility to properly handle the items from there.
Tips & Warnings
- Reusable grocery bags can be found at nearly any grocery store for a low cost. These bags are made of a heavy duty fabric that you can hand to the grocery clerk at checkout, thereby eliminating the need for you to use plastic grocery bags. Stock up on a few and take them with you each time you visit the grocery store or farmer's market.
