How to Build a Towel Rack PVC Pipe

Save

Build your own towel rack for an industrial twist on this bathroom staple. Most bathrooms have chrome-covered plastic towel bars that look cheap but are not wallet-friendly. You can build your own towel rack out of PVC pipe and save yourself money while personalizing your bathroom. You can choose any dimension of pipe you like and that your wall will support -- just make sure that all the parts are the same size so they fit together.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 PVC flanges
  • 2 PVC elbows
  • Straight PVC pipe, cut to desired length
  • Pipe dope
  • 8 screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Prepare the ends of the elbows according the directions on the pipe dope. Apply the pipe dope and fit one end of each elbow into the smaller side of each PVC flange.

  • Apply pipe dope to the free end of each elbow and fit the elbows onto the straight PVC pipe. Allow the pipe dope to cure per the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Install your towel rack by screwing a screw through the holes in the flanges into the wall. You may or may not need anchors or nylon screws depending on the weight of your towel rack (and towels) and the type of wall finish you have.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear safety glasses and work gloves when working with hazardous substances.
  • Another type of mastic may be used in place of pipe dope.
  • Read and follow all instructions when working with pipe dope, as it is flammable.
