How to Embroider Car Floor Mats

How to Embroider Car Floor Mats thumbnail
Car mats protect a car's carpet from dirt and wear.

Car mats, by design, must stand up to daily wear and tear as they protect the car's carpet from dirt, stains and wear marks. The supplies used in rug making are the most likely to hold up under the tough treatment car mats receive. Embroidering car floor mats yourself allows you to customize the design and colors. Make the mats yourself, use the mats provided by the car's manufacturer or purchase mats if you have a specific color in mind; then add your embroidered design.

Instructions

    • 1

Design a pattern for your mats. Bold stripes or a simple geometric pattern in colors to contrast with the car are effective.

    • 2

Purchase two yards of 60-inch wide rug-making canvas, of three holes per inch, if you plan to make the mats themselves. Buy 6-ply yarn in the colors of your design and strong tapestry needles for the embroidery.

    • 3

Cut your canvas to the size of the mats. Mark your design on each of the mats with a pen.

    • 4

Thread a needle with approximately 30 inches of yarn and knot the end. From the back of the canvas, push the needle up through one of the holes, pulling the yarn through until the knot sits comfortably at the back of the canvas. Push the needle back in to the canvas in the row above and one hole to the right. Use this basic, half-cross tapestry stitch to throughout the design.

    • 5

Bind the edges of each mat by threading a needle with contrasting yarn and working your way around each mat with a straight-over stitch. From the back of the mat, push your needle up through a stitch about three rows in from the edge of your mat. Repeat this process in the adjacent stitch, working your way around the mat from back to front of the mat for each stitch.

Tips & Warnings

  • The larger front mats should measure approximately, 25 inches by 17 inches each. The smaller mats for the back of the car should measure 13 inches by 17 inches.

  • Do not pull the yarn too tightly as you embroider your stitches. Keep the stitches at a similar tension throughout.
