How to Deactivate a Verizon Line

With the many different service providers available, you may one day decide you want to switch to another provider. This is also true when you have a line with Verizon Wireless. Before you can switch over to another service provider, you will want to deactivate your line and service with Verizon. However, because you must be under a contract in order to have service with Verizon, you may be subject to a hefty fee for early termination.

  • Call Verizon at its toll-free number, 1-800-VERIZON (1-800-837-4966), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.

  • Confirm your phone number by pressing "1" on your keypad.

  • Navigate through the menus to talk to a representative. Press the appropriate keys when the recording prompts you.

  • Ask the representative to cancel your account.

  • Pay the early termination fee if necessary. Depending on whether you have an advanced device, you may be subject to one of two hefty fees; as of late 2010, these fees are $175 or $350.
