How to Set Up Ventrilo for Voice Activation

Save

Ventrilo is a program designed to allow groups of people to speak to each other through the Internet using VoIP (voice over IP). Ventrilo offers configurations that let you decide who you want to hear and how you want the main program window to look. Many people use Ventrilo to speak to each other while playing intense games where you normally wouldn't have much time to type. Another reason to use it would be to chat with family or friends who are distant from you. Using Ventrilo itself is free, but you may have to pay hosting fees to a service to run a permanent server.

  • Click on the button labeled "Setup" at the right in the main Ventrilo window.

  • Make sure the "Voice" tab is selected and uncheck the box labeled "Use Push To Talk Hotkey (PTT Mode)."

  • Adjust the silence time by clicking in the drop-down box located at the middle-left section of the setup window. Silence time is the amount of seconds there must be silence before the microphone will stop transmitting.

  • Adjust your sensitivity rating, which is located under the silence time box. This is the sensitivity needed to start transmitting. If you would like to test sensitivities of your microphone, click the monitor button in the "Test with" section to start and stop monitoring sound from your microphone.

  • Click the "OK" button in the bottom-right section of the setup window to close it and begin chatting with voice activation.
