How to Make Fake Medieval Swords

If you're wearing a medieval costume for Halloween, a school play or to attend a medieval festival, you can make your costume more authentic by adding on period accessories. For example, you can create a medieval sword from craft materials that will look like a sword that could have been used hundreds of years ago. Once the sword is complete, you can wear it on the belt of your costume.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue stick
  • Yarn
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Cut out a rectangle from cardboard that measures 24 inches long and 3 inches high.

  • Cut out a square from cardboard that measures 5 inches on all sides.

  • Trim one end of the rectangle onto a point.

  • Trim the edges of the square to make it a circle.

  • Cut a 3-inch slit into the middle of the circle.

  • Slip the flat end of the rectangle into the slit, and slide it down 6 inches. The 6 inches will be the handle of the medieval sword.

  • Apply a line of hot glue along the are where the rectangle meets the circle. Allow the glue to cool completely.

  • Wrap yarn around the 6-inch handle until the the handle is approximately 1/2-inch thick with yarn.

  • Paint the sword with silver-colored acrylic paint, and allow it to dry completely before putting the sword into your belt.
