How to Secure Bathtub Flanges to Studs

Screwing a flange to a bathroom's studs is only one part of bathtub installation.

Installing a bathtub is a very involved process that includes plumbing, carpentry and, in many cases, tiling work. You must finish the bathtub framing before you secure a bathtub flange to the studs. After you attach the flange directly to the studs, you can can finish the walls next to the bathtub with drywall or tile.

Things You'll Need

• Cardboard
• Level
• Wooden shims
• Drill
• Drill bit
• Screwdriver

Instructions

1. Slide a piece of cardboard into the bottom of the tub. The cardboard will protect the tub from scratches as you climb in and out of the tub during installation.

2. Slide the tub into place in the bathtub framing. Bathtubs are heavy, so it may be helpful to recruit several friends to help move the tub into place.

3. Level the tub. Set a long level on the top of the tub (not inside the tub). Place wooden shims along the walls and floor to adjust the tub until it is level.

4. Create pilot holes for the tub flange in the wall studs, using a drill. Screw the tub flange to the wall studs with exterior grade screws. Make sure the tub stays level as you tighten the screws with a screwdriver.

5. Connect the tub's plumbing.

6. Install the drywall or the cement board for tiling directly over the top of the tub flange.
