How to Report Internet Scams to the FBI

The Internet offers unique opportunities for friends and family to keep in touch from long distances, for consumers to purchase and bid on goods that they can't find in stores and for people to research ideas and stay up-to-date on news. Unfortunately, the Internet is also home to many frauds and cons. You may find an email from a Nigerian prince asking you for help transferring funds into an overseas bank account. Or an item you paid for may never arrive in the mail. If you encounter a scam, you can report it to the FBI.

Instructions

1. Log on to the Internet and navigate your browser to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The IC3 is a partnership between the FBI, the National White Collar Crime Center and the Bureau of Justice Assistance. The IC3 investigates cyber crime, such as Internet scams.

2. Click "File a Complaint."

3. Follow the instructions on the screen to report the scam. You must provide your name, address, telephone number and information about the crime. Include the name, address and contact information of the person or company who swindled you (if you know it). Also include specific details about the crime and any other relevant information that can help the IC3 investigate.
