How do I Care for an Aluminum Trailer?

How do I Care for an Aluminum Trailer? thumbnail
Clean your aluminum trailer regularly to maintain its appearance.

Horse, camping and other trailers are generally made with either steel or aluminum frames. Aluminum trailers are more lightweight, but if you own one, you know that it can dent easily if it's stored outdoors and can oxidize quickly if it's not kept clean. If your trailer is not enclosed, it can also collect dirt and dust. How you maintain, store and clean your trailer will make a difference in its physical appearance and increase its durability and lifespan.

Instructions

Wipe your trailer clean of dirt and debris. Be sure all stuck-on mud is cleaned off. Common trouble spots include right above the wheels and at the trailer's rear. Use a damp cloth to remove the dirt. Use a garden hose to spray your trailer with water and wash it with soap as you would a car. If this doesn't work, try a power washer's high-pressure water spray.

Polish your trailer using a cleaning agent that is safe to use on aluminum. Ask a salesperson at your car care shop for his product recommendations. Use a polish that will remove brake dust, oxidation and water spots. Spray the polish directly onto your trailer and gently rub it into the trailer with a rag. Using a sealant on your trailer will preserve the work you've done and keep it looking shiny. Spray the wax onto your trailer, being sure to cover all aluminum areas. If you have an open trailer, such as a horse trailer, be sure to sweep the interior free of any debris after each use. A garden hose or power washer will help you remove stuck-on dirt.

Aluminum is a thin, lightweight metal. It can be dented easily, even by hail or a power washer's high-pressure water stream. When you are not using your trailer, store it in a covered place, such as a garage or covered parking space, to keep it safe from the elements. You may also use a cover that fits your trailer to keep dust and dirt away.
