How to Fully Defragment Leopard

A computer drive can become fragmented over time, which means that different parts of files end up stored in different places on a drive, instead of contiguously. Gathering file fragments and placing them together on a drive is known as defragmenting. Apple's Leopard uses the Hierarchical File System Plus (HFS+). Mac HFS+ volumes are designed to avoid fragmentation. Most defragmentation is handled in the background by Leopard. OS X does not defragment files larger than 20 MB. If necessary, there are commercial software utilities that can defragment Leopard's HFS+ file system.

Instructions

    • 1

Reboot the computer. The OS X operating system performs limited cache cleaning and optimization whenever you reboot.

    • 2

Install a third-party utility and defragment your drive. Commercial software is available to defragment Macintosh HFS+ volumes. Three options include iDefrag, Drive Genius and Speed Tools (see Resources).

    • 3

Defragment your Mac Steam game files using an option offered by Valve. The cache files for each game installed under Steam can be defragmented, but this method only defragments files managed by Steam.

    • 4

Back up your files and reinstall Leopard. Reinstall the operating system as an option of last resort to ensure that no system files are fragmented.

Tips & Warnings

  • Defragmentation of Mac drives is rarely necessary or worthwhile, because the file system is designed to avoid fragmentation.

  • Defragmenting a drive involves copying and moving files. If the computer crashes during defragmentation, your files might be corrupted.
