How to Replace a Tail Light on a 2003 Jetta

Like many German cars, the 2003 Volkswagon Jetta has a reputation of being a well built vehicle. However, even the most well built vehicles need small fixes over time. One of the easiest repairs your Jetta will need is replacing the tail lights. The simplicity of this repair allows just about anyone to save some money by doing the job themselves, sometimes even cutting the price in half with nothing more than a screwdriver and a compatible headlight that can be bought at most auto parts stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Engage the emergency brake and turn off the ignition for safety reasons. Open the trunk to gain access to the tail light.

    • 2

Remove the carpet that is covering the trim cover inside the trunk. Unscrew the trim cover and set aside the screws, as they will be needed later.

    • 3

Turn the tail light counterclockwise to remove it from the housing assembly.

    • 4

Insert the new tail light into the housing assembly by turning it clockwise before re-attaching the trim cover, using the screws that you set aside earlier. Place the trunk carpeting back over the trim cover.

    • 5

Enter your Volkswagon Jetta and press the brake to test out the new tail light. A second person may be needed if you are unable to determine if the light is working properly yourself.
