Step-by-Step for an FTP Server
Being unable to reach important files on a computer because you are away from it can be extremely frustrating. The solution lies in downloading and creating an FTP server on your home compute to upload and download files to your home PC from any outside location, like your office or hotel. Creating an FTP server is not that complicated, especially if you use one of the software options currently available for this purpose.
Instructions

-
1
Download an FTP server like Filezilla Server, Wing FTP Server or ServU FTP (see Resources). Choose to save the program when asked to either save or run it.
-
2
Go to the "Start" menu and select "Run. Type "cmd" in the window that appears and then type "ipconfig" in the black screen. Tap the "Enter" key and write down the IP address that you see.
-
-
3
Locate the FTP program in the folder you saved it to and click twice to start the installation. Select the "Default Installation" option. Choose to Install the program as a"Windows Service" and allow the program to start automatically with Windows. In most of the programs, these are default settings. Leave the default port number as is and click "Next."
-
4
Type "Local Host" in the next window that appears or type the server address, which is the IP address you wrote down. Choose an administrative password and check-mark "Always Connect to this Server" to avoid being asked every time you connect. Click "OK" and you will be returned to the administrator interface screen.
-
5
Choose a user name and password for the server. You can also add other users and give them passwords for the new FTP server. Click on the "Edit" or a similarly titled menu and select "Users." Click "Add" to create a new user and assign a password to the user. Choose the Home Directory as "C:" and select "Shared Folders" to assign the folders the user can access. Choose the computer files and folders you want to share or permissions you want to assign to different users. Some users can be assigned a "Read Only" designation to prevent files from being deleted or changed. Click "OK" to finish. You can assign as many or as few users as you want by following this step.
-
6
Log onto another computer in your home or at work. Download and install a program like FileZilla Client, FireFTP or Xlight FTP (see Resources).
-
7
Enter the Server address in the top toolbar of the window. This will be something like ftp://192.168.xxx.xx (the x's represent your IP address). Type in your user name and the password you selected. The FTP server window will activate, showing you available shared files for your user name.
