How to Measure Roman Blinds
Taking accurate measurements for Roman blinds will ensure a good fit on any window. Roman blinds may be inside-mount blinds or outside-mount blinds. The inside-mount blinds cover the glass area of the window only and fit inside the window casing for a low-profile appearance. The outside-mount blinds cover the window and its trim, and may be wider and longer than the actual window.
Instructions

Inside-Mount Roman Blinds
-
1
Remove all window treatments from the window to measure it without obstructions.
-
2
Stretch the measuring tape horizontally, at the top of the window, from the left side of the window inside the casing to the inside of the casing on the right side. Record the measurement to the nearest 1/8 inch on a piece of paper.
-
-
3
Measure the window inside the casing for this type of blinds in the same manner as in Step 2, this time measuring at the middle of the window casing, then at the bottom. Record these two measurements on paper.
-
4
Choose the smallest width of the three measurements. The blinds you'll purchase must be this size or smaller. This is the width of the window for inside-mount Roman blinds.
-
5
Stretch the measuring tape from the left top of the window inside the casing to the bottom of the window, or the sill, inside the casing. Repeat this process in the middle of the window and on the left side. Record all three measurements for the length of the Roman blinds.
-
6
Order or purchase blinds whose length is the same as or slightly longer than the longest of the three vertical measurements.
Outside-Mount Roman Blinds
-
7
Remove all window treatments from the window for unobstructed measurements.
-
8
Stretch the measuring tape horizontally at the top of the window, from the left side of the window outside the trim, across to the right side outside the window trim. Record this measurement.
-
9
Measure the middle and bottom width in the same manner as Step 2, and record the measurements.
-
10
Choose the largest figure. This is the minimum width for your outside-mount Roman blind for this window.
-
11
Stretch the measuring tape vertically from the top left corner of the window above the window trim to the bottom below the window trim. Record the measurement. Measure the vertical dimension for the center and right side of the window, outside the trim, in the same manner. Write these two measurements down. Choose blinds whose length is equal to or slightly greater than the largest vertical dimension you recorded.

Tips & Warnings
Outside-mount blinds may be larger than the outside casing to create an illusion of a larger window in both length and width when the blinds are drawn. Add extra width and length to the measurements for additional material in each direction if desired.
Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for additional height requirements at the top of an outside-mount blind, as they require different amounts of mounting space above the window.
Inside-mount shades require that there are no obstructions inside the window casing so that the mechanism may mount and operate property. If there are alarms or locks on the window inside the case, choose an outside-mount version.
Outside-mount shades require about 3 inches above the window for mounting flush to the wall. No obstructions should be in this area. If any item is in this zone, order inside-mount blinds.
