How to Set Up a LAN Network on Windows Vista

A LAN, or Local Area Network, is a group of connected computers with shared access to information or the Internet. Vista has simplified the task of setting up a LAN by requiring little or no user configuration.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if the computer is able to be connected to the LAN by checking for an Ethernet card. Turn off all the computers being networked.

    • 2

Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port, which is usually found on the back of the computer near the USB ports.

    • 3

Connect the opposite end of the cable to an open LAN port on your router. Do this for each computer you wish to network.

    • 4

Turn your computer on. Wait a few seconds for Vista to recognize the network and configure the settings.
