How to Fix Error 80070424 in Windows Vista 64-Bit
The Windows operating system will experience many types of errors depending on the operation or the type of application being used. One type of error that you may see when getting updates on Windows Vista is an Error 80070424. This type of error is typically a result of corrupt files that are used by the Windows Update service. Fixing this problem will require you to reinstall or fix the Windows service that uses the corrupt files.

Determine Windows Version

Click "Start" and select "Run." Alternatively, you may select "Start Search."

Type "msinfo32.exe" into the text box and press "Enter" or click "OK." This will open the System Information window.

Highlight "System Summary" and locate the entry for "System Type." The value "x86-based PC" is for the 32-bit version of Windows. The value "x64-based PC" is for the 64-bit version of Windows.
Install Windows Update Service

Click the appropriate TrustedInstaller file for your version of Windows (see Resources).

Choose "Save File" and select "Desktop." Click the "Save."

Double-click "windowsupdateagent20-x86.exe" or "windowsupdateagent30-ia64.exe" to install the Windows Update Agent.

Reboot your computer, if prompted, after completing the installation.
Reset Windows Update Components

Go to the Microsoft Web page for knowledge base article 971058.

Scroll down and click the "Fix-It" button. Click the "Run" button when the File Download dialog box appears on the screen.

Select "Default" for the mode and then follow the instructions in the Fix it wizard. Restart your system, if prompted, to complete the process.
