How to Program Satellite TV

Once you've installed the satellite antenna, or satellite dish, and you've installed all of the satellite TV receivers to both the antenna and your television set, it is still necessary to program or activate your satellite TV. Programming your satellite TV receiver is the only way that your receiver is able to unscramble or decode the channels that you are subscribing to so that your television can display the images it is receiving from the satellite service provider.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the main menu of your satellite receiver and enter the system information display screen. On most receivers from any satellite service provider, the easiest way to accomplish this task is by clicking the "info" button on your remote control twice.

    • 2

Locate both the receiver number and the smart card number in the system information display screen. This screen will have a lot of information on it but the receiver number and smart card number are usually preceded by the words "Receiver number" or "Smart Card number."

    • 3

Look at the back of your receiver box and locate the receiver number there, if the number is not available from the system information display screen. The receiver number on the receiver is usually displayed in a sticker that contains a bar-code directly above the receiver number.

    • 4

Look at the top or bottom of the smart card and locate the smart card number from there if you are unable to do so from the system information display screen. The smart card number on the smart card is usually displayed on its own at the center of the top or bottom of the card.

    • 5

Write down both the receiver and smart card numbers and then contact the satellite service provider's customer service hot line. Inform the customer service representative that you are looking to activate, or program, your receiver.

    • 6

Confirm your identity and account information to the customer service representative. Note that most satellite service providers are only able to assist you if you are the account holder, or an authorized user on the account. Vital account information includes account number, account name, security PIN number or password, account address and account contact information.
