How to Connect a Microphone With an L&R Cable

How to Connect a Microphone With an L&R Cable thumbnail
Hook up your microphone directly to a stereo left and right cable connection.

Microphones typically connect to outside hardware with one of three methods. The first is XLR, which is a professionally based cable connection and used on high-end microphones and audio recording equipment. The second is a quarter-inch cable, and the third is a 3.5 mm cable (computer-based microphones). No matter what microphone hook up you are using, if you want to connect it to a stereo system you need to convert it to a left and right RCA audio connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine your microphone to determine what cable connection you have running out the bottom of the microphone.

    • 2

Insert it into the RCA audio cable adapter you have. There are adapters or XLR, 3.5 mm and quarter-inch cables, most of which are available at electronics stores.

    • 3

Plug the left and right RCA audio cables into the stereo "In" port. This directly hooks up the microphone to your home audio system.

    • 4

Power on the microphone and the stereo system. Begin to talk into the microphone and the audio is produced through the system's speakers.
