How to Traceroute the Domain Name

How to Traceroute the Domain Name thumbnail
Traceroute identifies the Internet pathway between computers.

Traceroute is a function available on the Internet to track the path of a unit of information, known as an "IP packet," as it travels from node to node along the Internet. For instance, traceroute shows that a request for web page access made from a desktop computer in Washington, D.C. to Demand Studios passes through more than 15 nodes in Washington, New York and San Jose before arriving at its final destination. Initiating a traceroute command is straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Select an online traceroute tool to run your trace (see Resources).

    • 2

Select "trace" or "traceroute" from the menu of available tools.

    • 3

Enter the domain name for which you want to find the traceroute. The domain name can be a standard format such as "www.ehow.com" or it can be a numerical IP address like "169.42.20.1."

    • 4

Click on "Search" or "Go." The traceroute will return Internet pathway results.
