How to Delete Photos From a Computer Hard Drive

If you have too many photos on your computer's hard drive, removing the ones you no longer need can improve computer speed and performance because it frees system resources. Windows and Mac OS X computers include tools (Windows Photo Gallery and Finder, respectively) that allow you to view all your photos quickly, without having to dig through system folders. These system utilities help you delete photos from your computer's hard drive with little effort.

Instructions

  1. Windows

      Click the Windows "Start" menu, select "Programs" and click "Windows Photo Gallery" to launch the photo management application.

      Select "All Pictures and Videos" and select "Pictures" to view a list of the pictures on your computer. To find pictures by date, select the year, month, or day under "Date Taken."

      Right-click the photo you want to remove and click "Delete." When prompted, click "Yes" to confirm. Alternatively, delete the photos by dragging them to the recycle bin on the desktop.

      Right-click the "Recycle Bin" and click "Empty Recycle Bin."

    Mac OS X

      Click the "Finder" icon on the dock if you are unsure where you stored your photos. This launches the Finder window.

      Click the "Search for" drop-down arrow and click "All Images." Apple Finder displays all the photos on your computer.

      Select the photos you want to delete and drag them to the trash bin on the dock.
