Macrame Plant Holder Instructions

Macrame is the art of creating textiles by tying knots. Many people first encounter macrame when making friendship bracelets out of embroidery thread as children. In the 1970s, homes were adorned with macrame plant holders and owls. The owls have had a resurgence as kitschy retro decorations, but the plant holders remain useful. Create your own decorative and inexpensive macrame plant holders using hemp or jute twine or macrame cord, which you can buy in craft stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 12 pieces of cord, each 6-yards long and one 36-inch strand. Light the candle, melt a puddle of wax, and dip the ends of the cord in the wax to keep them from fraying.

    • 2

Attach all the long cords to one of the metal rings using lark's head knots. To make a lark's head knot, fold the cord in half and stick the loop at the folded end through the ring. Pull the two long ends through and tighten the cord against the ring.

    • 3

Separate the strands into six groups of four cords. Tie six square knots in each group of cords. You are working from the bottom of the plant hanger to the top.

    • 4

Set the pot of your plant on the ring and pull the cords up around it. Take two cords from one group of four and two cords from the group next to it. Tie them into a square knot that hits the pot halfway up. Work around the pot in this fashion until you have created six new four-cord groups.

    • 5

Create long "sennits," or ornamental twists, out of each of the six groups of four cords. Tie a spiral design by taking the far right cord and bringing it over the middle two cords. Bring the far left cord behind the middle cords and pull it through the loop of the right cord. Continue in this pattern for 8 inches in each group.

    • 6

Tie a 12-inch sennit of square knots in each of the six groups. To make a square knot, bring the left cord over the two middle cords. Pass the right strand over the left, behind the two middle cords, and through the loop on the left hand side. Tie the second half of the knot by reversing these directions. Tighten the knot by pulling on both ends.

    • 7

Pass all the cords through the second ring, folding them in half as you do so. Knot each folded cord around the ring by tying it to itself.

    • 8

Use the 36-inch cord to make a wrapped knot around all the others. Fold the cord in half and lay the folded end next to the cluster of knots around the second ring. Take one end of the folded cord and wrap it around all the other knots and the other half of the cord five times. Work upwards towards the loop. Bring the end through the loop and pull the ends to tighten the knot.
