How to Sew Seam Binding on Round Tablecloths

How to Sew Seam Binding on Round Tablecloths thumbnail
An elegant decorator fabric makes a beautiful tablecloth.

Round tablecloths look good when they are edged in bias tape. This seam binding tape has a stretchy quality because it is made across the bias of the fabric. This feature allows the bias tape to stretch around the curve at the bottom of a round tablecloth. Bias tape can be handmade out of the same fabric as the tablecloth if you have the time and tools to make the tape. Otherwise, you can use readily available tapes in complementary colors to the fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the round tablecloth face-up on the work surface. Open one fold on the single-fold bias tape. Align the raw edge of the bias tape and the raw edge of the tablecloth and pin along the fold of the bias tape. The fold is often 1/4-inch from the edge of the bias tape.

    • 2

Sew the bias tape to the tablecloth by sewing in the pinned open fold. Sew all the way around and overlap the end by 1/2 inch.

    • 3

Fold the bias tape to the wrong side of the tablecloth fabric. Pull on the width of the tape slightly so that the bias tape will be hidden at the hem edge. Pin the tape all around the tablecloth.

    • 4

Edge stitch near the folded edge of the bias tape. Stay around 3/32-inch from the fold as you sew. Allow the tape to ease and follow the curve as you sew. When you are done, only a single line of sewing will show at the bottom. If the cloth is turned over, the edge is perfectly hemmed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Iron the tablecloth to ease the fabric past the seam before edge-sewing the bias tape to the wrong side of the tablecloth. This will help make the bias tape disappear from the right side.
