How to Use Parental Controls Stop Internet Access thumbnail
Don't let your children learn bad habits from strangers.

Online safety is essential to any household, but most young children and teenagers are unaware of the dangers of the Internet world. It is generally not considered overprotective action to choose how your children or household members should access the Internet. Most computer browsers come equipped with parental controls, but there are also programs that can be purchased to fill the gaps of content blockage, limit Internet access and even automatically shut down the computer after a set amount of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Enable the Parental Controls on Internet Explorer. From the tool bar, select "Tools" and then "Internet Options" from the drop-down list.

    • 2

Click the "Content" tab. Find the "Content Advisor" section and select "Enable". The Content Advisor page will allow you to adjust what kind of content the user will have access to. In the "Approved Sites" tab, you can copy and paste URL's that you deem appropriate to always allow. Set a supervisor password in the "General" tab so that you will be the only user with the ability to alter these settings.

    • 3

Purchase a Parental Control Program. Many different types of software blocking programs are available, such as EZ Software or Internet Lock (See "Resources"), some of which are made for specific age groups.

    • 4

Choose the program according to your needs. They are generally not too expensive, but the more featured settings available will most likely increase the price. These programs vary in ability; they can help you restrict certain websites, allow you to set a shut down time for Internet access, allow only a few websites for viewing privileges, password protect the Internet or completely shut down your computer's power at a certain time.

    • 5

Download the blocking software and install it onto your computer according to the user manual's instructions. Different programs will have different installation and setting procedures, so read the manuals carefully.
