How to Self Check DSL Speed

How to Self Check DSL Speed thumbnail
You can check your DSL speed online.

When you purchase a DSL package from your Internet service provider, you pay for speeds "up to" a certain rate, known as megabits per second. The speed of your line depends on its quality and distance from the DSL central office. You can test the speed of your connection online using testing websites. You can also ask your provider to test your connection to their central office.

Instructions

  1. How to Test your DSL Speed.

    • 1

Open your Web browser and go to Speedtest.net.

    • 2

Speedtest will automatically match you with the nearest server to your location. Click "Begin Test." Make sure you are not downloading or uploading any files during the test. This includes streaming videos on YouTube.

    • 3

Compare the test results to the upload and download speeds advertised in your DSL package.

    • 4

If the test result speeds are considerably lower, contact your Internet provider and ask them to run a line test to see whether you are fully connected to their central office. They can reset your connection to their office in an attempt to give you a better connection.
