How to Test Your Internet Line Speed

How to Test Your Internet Line Speed thumbnail
You can test your Internet connection to see if you are getting optimal speed.

When you purchase a high-speed internet package from your provider, you pay for speeds "up to" a certain transfer rate in megabits per second. The speed of your line depends on its quality and if you're on a DSL connection, its distance from the central office. You can test the speed of your connection by using testing websites and you can ask your provider to test your connection to their central office.

Instructions

  1. How to Test Your Internet Speed

    • 1

Open your web browser and go to the Speakeasy speed test website.

    • 2

Select the city server closest to your location and let the speed test run. Make sure you are not downloading or uploading anything during the test. Write down the results of the test.

    • 3

Go to the Speedtest website which will automatically determine your location and click "Begin Test." Write down the results of the test.

    • 4

Compare the results of the tests to the speeds advertised by your provider for your high-speed connection.

    • 5

If the test speeds were considerably lower than the advertised connection speed, contact your Internet provider and ask them to test your connection to their office. They can reset your connection in an attempt to give you a maximum connection to their office.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your Internet connection speed may falter during thunderstorms because of noise on your line. Make sure you are not downloading, uploading or streaming anything while testing.
