If you don't have a cell phone and want to send a text message, use your computer.

You may want to or need to send a text message from a computer to a cell phone for several reasons. For one, it gives you anonymity. It also provides a way for those without cell phones to send text messages. For whatever reason you decide to use a computer to send a text message, you can accomplish this simple (and usually free) procedure in several ways---through email, websites or programs.

Things You'll Need

  • Email account (optional)
  • Cell phone number you wish to message
  • Carrier email address (email to sms gateway) of the phone number you want to message

      To send text message via email, log in to your email account. Click the link to compose a new message. In the "To" field, enter the email address associated with the recipient's phone number, aka the "email to SMS-gateway" (for example, 1112345566@vzw.net). In the body of the email, type your message. Click "Send" when finished.

      To send text message via your cell phone carrier's website, go to your wireless carrier's website. Click the link that appears on the home page, or possibly once you have logged into your account home page, that will allow you to send text messages. (The text of this link will vary from carrier to carrier.)

      To send text message via website, navigate to a site that allows you to send text messages from computer to cell phone. (See Resources for links to a couple of sites that allow you to send text messages for free). These sites will usually ask that you enter the recipient's phone number and a brief message, and then simply click "Send."

Tips & Warnings

  • Some websites designed for sending text messages from computer to mobile charge you in order to receive text messages, although they may allow you to send them free of charge.

  • To send text messages via some websites designed for texting from a computer, you may need to know the recipient's cell phone carrier.

  • Cell phone carriers may or may not allow you to send text messages from their sites.

  • When you send text messages using email, you can receive reply messages (such as normal email) for free.
