How to Phone Taiwan

When making international calls, dial quickly to prevent disconnection.

Calling Taiwan from the United States or Canada may require you to authorize international long distance on your cell phone or your land line. If you call Taiwan regularly, you may benefit from paying a monthly fee for lower per minute rates. However, if you call infrequently, these fees may be more than you will save in calling rates. If the call won't connect, call your phone carrier to make sure that international calling is enabled; if not, they may be willing to alter your account to accommodate that type of calling.

Instructions

1. Pick up the receiver.

2. Dial the international access code. In the United States and Canada, that code is "011."

3. Dial the country code. Taiwan's country code is "886." The country code must follow the international access code in Step 2.

4. Dial the area code. Domestic dialing in Taiwan requires a 0 before the area code, such as "035." However, you must drop the 0 for dialing from international locations, so you would only dial "35."

5. Dial the number. Some telephone numbers in Taiwan are only six digits, such as "234-234." However, larger urban areas, like Taipei, have eight-digit phone number, such as "1234-1234."

Tips & Warnings

• Dial the numbers without pauses, especially if calling from a land line. Pausing too long might cause the connection to drop. This would require dialing again.

• If you make many calls to Taiwan, calling cards can be cheaper. If using a calling card, dial the card's toll free number before following the above instructions. Calling cards are often much cheaper than phone carrier rates. They are also useful if your carrier doesn't offer international calling.
