Glass bottles can be recycled by cutting them down for different uses.

Consumers can recycle used wine, beer and glass soda bottles into cups, votive holders and glass funnels by cutting them with a Dremel tool. Reusing your glass bottles offers a budget-friendly alternative to purchasing new glass items. Your high-speed Dremel tool makes cutting bottles down a relatively simple process.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap painter’s tape around your bottle just below where you intend to cut. Make sure the tape marks a straight, level line around the bottle. Apply another piece of tape about 1/8 inch above your first piece. Fill a spray bottle with cool water.

    • 2

Put on goggles and a facemask as protection against flying glass particles. Snap a 545 diamond wheel attachment onto the end of your Dremel tool and set the edge of the wheel into the space between the pieces of tape.

    • 3

Turn on the Dremel to high speed and run it slowly and gently over the glass. Do not push down; this will slow the wheel and possibly break your tool. Let the diamond wheel do the work. It will only score the glass at first.

    • 4

Stop every 2 inches or so and spray the cut glass with water. This cools the glass and prevents your wheel from overheating.

    • 5

Run the wheel over the glass several times, scoring it deeper each time and cooling the cuts with water. Depending on the thickness of your bottle, the wheel should cut through the glass completely in three to four passes.
