How to Make Your Own Family Crest for Free

A mock family crest can be a fun craft project which allows you to be creative and express values or objects that reflect your personality and things that are important to your family and in your life. You can choose traditional symbols like those customarily used in genuine family crests or modern symbols that have a special meaning to you. Once you are satisfied with your design you can use it on your personal stationary, embroider it on your luggage, and use it to embellish other personal belongings.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Colored pencils
  • Markers
  • Scanner (optional)
  • Computer (optional)
  • Design software (optional)
  • Printer
  • Cardstock
  • Frame

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch an outline shape for your crest on a blank sheet of paper using a pencil. This outline can be a traditional shield shape or any geometric shape. This shape can be drawn at an angle, adding character to the design. It can also be divided into two or more sections, each in a different color.

    • 2

Draw symbolic shapes or figures that represent your trade, accomplishments, or anything else that is important to you or your family.

    • 3

Write your surname and a motto (if you wish to add one) using a font suitable for the affect you want your crest to impress. You can write the surname in an ornate font and the motto in plain lettering, or any other style you like. You can also add a banner around the writing in any way you find visually pleasing.

    • 4

Draw symbols on the crest. You can follow traditional symbols, like animals, or new ones that represent you occupation, interests, or events in your life.

    • 5

Color the crest using colored pencils or markers. Like the symbols, colors can follow a traditional meaning, represent a personal interpretation, or simply be ones that you like. They can also correspond to the national colors of your country of origin.

    • 6

Scan your completed crest if you have access to design software. Use the program to enhance your crest’s pattern.

    • 7

Print your crest on high quality cardstock and frame it.
