If you notice a foul smell in your kitchen, it may be coming from the garbage disposal. Food and grime accumulate inside of the disposal and on the blades, and often emit a strong smell. A stinky garbage disposal can smell up the entire kitchen. Clean your garbage disposal with common household products to get rid of the smell.   • Lemon or lime
  • Rag
  • Dish soap
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ½ cup white vinegar

      Run the garbage disposal to clear any food from inside.

      Cut a lemon or lime into quarters. Put the quarter inside the garbage disposal.

      Turn on the tap to the hottest water possible. Turn on the garbage disposal and let it run for about one minute.

      Turn off the garbage disposal. Lift up the rubber flaps and wipe each one with a rag and soapy water. Rinse the flaps with clear water.

      Pour ½ cup of baking soda down the disposal if the smell remains. Follow this by pouring ½ cup white vinegar into the disposal. Let the vinegar and baking soda sit in the disposal for at least five minutes.

      Turn the tap on to the hottest water possible and flush out the disposal for 30 seconds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put three to five ice cubes in the disposal and run it for about one minute before cleaning. The ice cubes will help loosen up any stuck-on food and will also sharpen the blades.
