How to Study Marine Law

How to Study Marine Law thumbnail
Studying marine law requires dedication and years of education.

For students who wish to focus a legal practice in the area of marine law (often referred to as maritime law), there are two basic study options. The first option is to take basic marine law classes while in law school. The second option is to pursue a LL.M. (masters of law) program after completing their Juris Doctorate (law degree). A Juris Doctorate degree alone will allow you to practice any type of law you choose; however, obtaining an LL.M. in maritime law is a good idea since marine law is such a highly specialized area of the law.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete a four year undergraduate degree at a college or university. You may select any major you choose but a major in marine biology or something similar would be a good choice if you plan to pursue a career in maritime law.

    • 2

Continue your education at an American Bar Association accredited law school and graduate with a Juris Doctorate. Choose a law school that offers courses or internships in marine or maritime law. Tulane University and the University of Maine are two examples of law schools within the United States that offer a selection of maritime law classes and opportunities.

Apply to an LL.M. program that offers a maritime law specialty. An LL.M. is generally a one year program that offers students the opportunity to study in a specialized area of the law. Most LL.M. programs require students to have a Juris Doctorate or be working toward one in order to be accepted into the LL.M. program. Tulane University is the only university in the United States that offers an LL.M. program in maritime law. Many international universities also offer an LL.M. in maritime law. Examples include National University of Singapore, University of London and the University of Oslo.
