A limited liability company (LLC) is a type of business entity that is created pursuant to state law. LLCs offer protection from personal liability for the business owners, who are called "members", similar to a corporation, but also provides single taxation to the members, like a partnership. In order to start an LLC in Texas, you must file the organizing document, called a "Certificate of Formation," with the Texas Secretary of State.

Complete the Certificate of Formation. The form requires you to provide information concerning the name of the LLC, the name and address of the registered agent, how the LLC will be governed, the purpose of the LLC, and the names and addresses of the organizer and managers. The name of the LLC must be followed by an LLC designator, such as "Limited Liability Company," "Limited Company," "L.L.C.," "LLC," "L.C.", or "LC."
