How to Prevent Ringworm

Ringworm can infect the groin ("jock itch"), the feet (athlete's foot) and the scalp. It is easier to prevent the spread of ringworm than it is to treat it. Good hygiene may help keep ringworm from infecting you or your family.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Avoid contact with people or animals that have ringworm. Signs of infection include flakes of skin on the fur, excessive itching, patchiness and hair loss.
Step2
Teach children not to share combs, hairbrushes, ribbons and barrettes, or hats.
Step3
Wear shoes in public areas, and wear thongs in public showers and swimming areas.
Step4
Check your child's scalp for redness or patchiness, and wash your hands afterwards. If you suspect she has ringworm, let her teachers and her friends' parents know.
Step5
Teach your child not to pick at her scalp, and to wash her hands after handling pets, especially unknown ones.
Step6
Keep the groin and feet cool and dry, as much as possible. Sprinkle talcum powder on the groin. Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear and socks, and change them often.
Step7
See your doctor if lesions develop.

Tips & Warnings

  • See a doctor if large portions of the scalp are affected. Ringworm over large portions of the scalp cannot be treated effectively with over-the-counter medication. Without a doctor's care, you or your child could have permanent scalp scarring.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, contact a physician or other health care professional before engaging in any activity related to health and diet. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.

on 4/17/2007 We eradicated ringworm on the skin in 2 weeks by rubbing Clorox bleach on it, washing it off then applying Lamisil cream every night. I was told a little bleach in water for a foot soak gets rid of Athlete's Foot as well.

on 11/22/2005 I was told iodine spread over the affected area helps halt the continued spread of this fungus. Also Nizoral or Lamisil is a good shampoo and for African-Amer. hair, Sulfur 8 medicated hair pomade encourages regrowth.

on 7/11/2006 Apart from good hygiene and applying a good quality anti-fungal cream daily, taking garlic capsules in any form is a good safe alternative for adults and children 2 years and over. Garlic has natural anti fungal and anti parasitic qualities. This will stop the spreading of the ringworm further and will help stop reinfection. Also, anti fungal/anti bacterial washing rinses can be added to washing machine in the softener dispenser.

Ringworm can take a long time to treat and any methods used should be used for a minimum of a month to effectively eradicate them.
