How to Change the Transmission Oil in a Honda Civic

On the bottom of the transmission on most Honda Civic models will be a drain plug that must be removed in order to drain the fluid from the transmission. The owner's manual will have the recommendations as to when you must change the transmission fluid. This is not a difficult job to complete, but you will need to do this correctly to ensure that your Honda Civic's transmission stays in proper working order at all times.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • 2 jack stands
  • Drain pan
  • Ratchet set
  • Funnel
  • Replacement transmission fluid

      Lift the front end of the Honda Civic off of the ground using the jack. Lower the front end onto a pair of jack stands.

      Place the drain pan under the transmission and remove the plug from the bottom of the transmission using the ratchet set. Drain the fluid into the drain pan and replace the plug to the bottom of the transmission.

      Remove the drain pan from under the transmission. Use the jack to lift the front end of the Honda Civic up and remove the jack stands out from under the Civic. Lower the car to the ground.

      Open the hood and remove the red handle dipstick from the engine. Insert the funnel into the dipstick tube and pour the replacement transmission fluid into the transmission. Remove the funnel, replace the dipstick and close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • The transmission filter will also need to be changed and the magnets inside the transmission must be cleaned as well.
