Decorate a piece of construction paper. Draw favorite pictures or shapes and add color. More colorful lanterns catch the eye. If the occasion is formal, simple artwork may be more appropriate. Save the glitter for less formal occasions, like children's parties. Children can draw all over their paper. Save the buttons, candy or popcorn for Step 4.

Fold the paper in half, widthwise. In kids' terms, this is called a hamburger fold rather than a hot dog fold. The end result mimics a hamburger bun. Cut slits in the paper from the fold stopping about 1 1/2 inches from the end. The slits should be 1/2 inch apart. Open the paper. Wrap the paper into a cylinder, hot dog-style, or lengthwise.

Glue the end strips together. Let the paper dry.

Glue any extra decorative items on. Attach candy and popcorn to the top and bottom. Add glitter, ribbons and all last-minute touches. Hang the lanterns individually, or string them together on a long piece of yarn. Tie the yarn between two poles or attach it to a wall with tape.
