How to Convert Docx Files to Doc in Word

When Microsoft Word 2007 was released, it introduced "docx," the new default file format for documents saved in this word processor. The docx file format saves word files in Zip compression, making them 75 percent smaller than the previous doc format. It also has an improved recovery feature that allows docx to be opened even if part of the file has become corrupted, unlike doc files that are difficult to recover once corrupted. Docx files can easily be converted to the doc format in Word 2007.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Microsoft Word 2007. Click the “Microsoft Office button” at the upper left corner of the window.

    • 2

Click the “Save As” menu, and then select “Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)” among the list of options. Enter the name of the document that you want in the “File Name” box provided.

    • 3

Select the “Save” button and make sure that the file name in the “Save as Type” box shows *.doc. Once saved, the file becomes automatically converted to doc and is compatible with older versions of MS Word.
