How to Make a Ceramic Decal thumbnail
Decorate your ceramic pieces with decals.

By using ceramic decals, you add designs to your creations without using paint. If you want to make the piece a color other than white, you will need to paint it first and let the paint dry before applying a ceramic decal. Be sure to purchase water slide decals that can withstand the heat of the kiln. If you are unsure about a type of water slide decal paper, contact the manufacturer and ask if you can fire the decal paper in a kiln.

  • Ink jet printer
  • Computer
  • Water slide decal paper
  • Scissors
  • Pan filled with water
  • Squeegee
  • Kiln

Instructions

    • 1

      Print out your decal image on a sheet of water slide decal paper.

    • 2

      Cut out the decal image from the sheet of decal paper. Put the decal in a pan of water for about 50 seconds.

    • 3

      Put the decal backing paper side down on the ceramic piece, then slide away the backing paper. Remove wrinkles and extra water from the decal with a squeegee.

    • 4

      Store the ceramic piece away from direct sunlight for 24 hours. Fire the ceramic piece in your kiln.
