How to File Taxes Online in the State of Massachusetts
If you were a citizen of Massachusetts during the entire tax year, you may be eligible to file your taxes online using the Massachusetts Department of Revenue's online WebFile tool. The WebFile website also contains a comprehensive database that will explain in detail answers to questions you may have about filing your state tax return online.

Determine if you are eligible to file your taxes online with the Massachusetts Department of Revenue's WebFile service. The Department of Revenue has page, linked in the Resources section, that you may use to determine your eligibility status. In order to be eligible to file taxes online, you must not have lived in any state other than Massachusetts during the tax year. You must also not be reporting Installment sales that took place Jan. 1, 1996 through Dec. 31, 2002. If you are able to answer "no" to these two questions, indicated on the eligibility requirements page, you will be able to register and file your taxes online.

Register for an account on the Massachusetts Department of Revenue website, linked in the Resources section. You will need to provide your Social Security number, email address, first and last name, and phone number. You will also need to provide the form with a user name and password that you will use to log into the website. Provide your PIN number or refund amount, depending on the option you choose

Log into your account on the main WebFile page, linked in the Resources section.

Begin filing your tax return using the WebFile tool. You will need to select the type of return you are filing. Choose either single, married filing jointly or married filing separate. Follow the instructions given to you on the WebFile tax return form to successfully file your Massachusetts tax return.

Tips & Warnings

By Massachusetts law, you are required to file a tax return with the state if your total yearly income was over $8,000. If your income was less during the tax year, you are not required to file a return.
If you need to contact the Department of Revenue, you may call 1-800-392-6089 between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.
