How to Garden Trees in Containers
When limited space is a landscape problem, container gardening can be a welcome option. Container-grown trees can add interest and height to your porch or patio. Simply choosing the container size and color and the type of dwarf tree you would like can get you started. Things You'll Need
- Plastic or wooden containers at least 18 inches in diameter
- Saucer
- Dwarf tree
- Slow release fertilizer
- Potting soil or compost
- Garden trowel

Place the container on a level surface in an area where the tree can receive the proper degree of sunlight. Choose your spot carefully; the container may be too heavy to move once soil is added.

Add three to four inches of potting soil or compost to 18-inch containers. For containers larger than that, add at least five to six inches. Scatter the amount of fertilizer indicated on the instructions listed on the fertilizer container according to the size of the pot.

Remove the tree from its original pot and place it in the container. The top of the root-ball should be slightly lower than the lip of the pot. Add more compost if necessary to ensure the tree is at the proper height. Fill the container with the potting soil; press the soil firmly around the tree's base.

Water the container thoroughly to settle the compost and ensure the tree has adequate moisture.

Tips & Warnings
Be sure to check the container annually to see if the tree needs to be re-potted.
Water your container tree at least once a week.
