How to Make a Tied Lap Blanket
Tied blankets are warm, cuddly blankets that can be made to any size. They are easy to make, inexpensive, take less than 20 minutes to complete and require only a pair of sharp scissors and some fleece fabric.
They are perfect for gifts and are welcomed by many volunteer agencies for use by the elderly, very young and disabled people of all ages in between. See the Resource section for links to volunteer agencies that would love to have some of your blankets.

1
Buy two pieces of no-sew fleece fabric. Choose fabrics that look well together and are of the same weight. The fabric should be 8 inches wider and longer than the finished size you want.
-
2
Place the fabric on a smooth surface big enough for the whole piece to lie flat. Put the wrong sides of the two fabrics together.
-
-
3
Pin them together around the perimeter at least 8 inches from the edge so they do not interfere with the cutting of slits. Space the pins approximately every 8 to10 inches to prevent the fabric from slipping. Trim the fabric so that both pieces are exactly the same size.
-
4
Cut a 4 by 4-inch square out of each corner so the blanket will lie flat when it is finished. Always cut through both fabrics at the same time every place you make a cut.
-
5
Cut slits around the entire outside of the blanket. Each slit should be 4 inches deep and spaced 1 to 2 inches apart depending on the size of the blanket. The larger the blanket, the larger the space can be.
-
6
Start at one corner and tie the first top and bottom strips together using a square knot or double knot. Tighten the knot so it is against the uncut part of the blanket, but not so tight that the blanket does not lie flat.
-
7
Continue all the way around the blanket until you have reached the first corner. Smooth out the blanket and re-do any knots that you are not satisfied with. The blanket is complete.
